Also called ignitors or ignition modules, ignition control modules started replacing points ignition mechanisms in the late 1960s. Since they use solid-state electronics instead of mechanical rotors and contact points, they’re more reliable and durable, and allow for a more powerful spark.

GM’s HEI (High Energy Ignition) system is an example of an early success story for ignition modules. The system incorporates the module, coil, and magnetic pickup inside the distributor.
