No matter what sort of distributor you’re using—points, magnetic, or optical—it will have a cap made of an insulating material. Most distributor caps have one terminal post per cylinder, to which the spark plug wire attaches. Many caps have these posts parallel to the distributor shaft, while others, called crab-style distributor caps, have the posts pointing perpendicular to the shaft.
Engine heat cycles and vibration can damage the insulating material of the distributor cap, which allows some of the spark energy to escape. This can lead to a weak spark and incomplete ignition, so be sure to inspect it for damage at every tune-up.
