The Blue Max moniker first appeared at the 1970 NHRA Winter nationals on a Ford Mustang Funny Car owned by Harry Schmidt. The flashy blue paint scheme, the trick lettering, and the famed painting of the WWI German commendation medal for combat flying distinguished it from the others.
