Tom Prock and Jay Howell formed one of the most interesting and successful drag racing partnerships of the late 1960s. At the time, Howell was working at the famed Logge Stamping Company overseeing their shop. Logge was a very large volume producer of drag racing chassis at that time—and along with all of their other projects, a guy named Tom Prock had a 1933 Willys that he wanted updated. Instead of going the standard direction, the guys put a Logge funny car chassis under it and were quickly informed by NHRA officials at their first event that the car was not legal to run there or anywhere in the gas classes due to said chassis. They raced the car here and there in 1968 on the match race circuit and then figured it was all done. Then the phone rang in early 1969 and the boys decided to hitch up with a couple of other gassers, load a nitro burning 426 Hemi into the front of their car and travel the country as "outlaw gassers." The F-Troop '33 Willys is legend for wild runs with Howell at the wheel. The car went into the 180s and in various interviews, Howell said that the thing was a complete handful to get down the track at those speeds. We can only imagine. This 1:18 scale Acme diecast model commemorates the legendary 1933 Gasser built and raced by Prock and Howell. This 1:18 scale 1970 Buick GSX diecast model is an excellent rendition of its life-size counterpart. The Buick GSX was a specially designed muscle car produced to take on the top contenders of the time. Right off the lot, the 1970 Buick GSX could accelerate from 0 to 60 in under six seconds and have a quarter-mile track run of around 13.5 seconds, topping out at 105 miles per hour. It was a real beast in straight-line sprints! The car was only available in two colors from the factory: Apollo White and Saturn Yellow, both of which had colorful striping to make it stand out even more. Though the '70 Buick GSX may not be one of the most well-known muscle cars, it is one that held a record for 33 years! 1:18 scale 1965 Shelby GT350 Snake On A Plane diecast model honors Dave Steine's '65 Shelby GT350 that was scheduled for delivery via air freight to Romy Hammes Ford in South Bend, Indiana by Trans World Airlines. It was loaded onto a Boeing 707-331F freighter at the Los Angeles International Airport and jetted across the continent. However, after delivery to the dealership, the buyer backed out of the deal, so the TWA pilot who flew the car from Los Angeles to Indiana got word of this turn of events and decided to buy the car from Hi-Performance Motors, Shelby's own dealership in Southern California. So, the car was air freighted back to Los Angeles for delivery to the pilot. "Akron" Arlen Vanke was a working man's drag racer. Competing--and winning--in the Stock, Super Stock and Pro Stock classes, he set records with Pontiacs and, later, Plymouths, earning multiple Stock Eliminator titles with both marques. Through it all, he built the cars in a backyard garage and often drove his open ramp truck to the track and back. In fact, Chrysler hired Vanke to test their performance technology. In 1967, Arlen modified the RO23 Hemi intake manifold for racing. "NHRA rules allowed racers to modify the intake manifold, so I made the stock manifold into a plenum chamber manifold, " he said. Vanke's Hemi, along with the Sox and Martin team, gave Mopars so many victories in the late '60s that they dominated the scene in Super Stocks. In 1968, he built this incredible East Town Hemi Cuda, which helped him win the Nationals in August at Indy running SS/B. He then reset the record again with a 10.61 at 140 miles per hour in the Plymouth Cuda in SS/A at the Winter Nationals in Pomona, California. Now you can own a 1:18 scale replica of the Super Stock race car. Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant were at the wheel as they had been during the historic winning effort at Le Mans. Gurney set the fastest GT qualifying time during the race. Unfortunately, a broken tail shaft on the transmission put the car out of the race during the 2nd hour. This '64 Daytona coupe would go down infamy by having the unique distinction of carrying the famous Dan Gurney for President stickers on the rear fenders of the car. This 1:18 scale 1932 Ford truck diecast model is an homage to the legendary So-Cal Speed Shop. Unlike many tales, the story of the So-Cal Speed Shop is not one made up by some clever marketing types; it's a true story of friendship, hot rods and the need for speed. The story begins on March 22, 1922 in Los Angeles with the birth of Alex Xydias. Although his father was a prominent producer of silent movies, Alex's childhood was fairly normal, and like most young boys, he naturally gravitated toward automobiles. His first hot rod, a '29 Ford roadster with a milled head and a chopped flywheel, which he drove to Fairfax High School, was paid for with part-time earnings. However, his life, like that of so many young men, was about to change when, in 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps, serving as a B-17 engineer. On the day of his discharge—March 3, 1946—using some borrowed money, Alex opened the first So-Cal Speed Shop on Olive Avenue in Burbank. Over the following decades, So-Cal Speed Shop would build some of the most iconic hot rods for many of the most notable collectors on the planet. Their innovation and attention to detail set the bar in the hot rod industry. So, without further ado, ACME is pleased to announce this So-Cal Speed Shop 1932 Ford Hot Rod Pickup in honor of all the accomplishments that Alex and the So-Cal team has achieved!
