The Revell 1:48 P-61 Black Widow model kit is an incredibly detailed replica of the Northrop P-61 that was shrouded in secrecy from its inception. Known as the "Black Widow", it was the first U.S. aircraft designed exclusively as a night fighter and one of the first outfitted with radar capabilities. Powered by Pratt and Whitney engines, the P-61 could reach a top speed of over 370 miles per hour, helping make it the most advanced night-fighter of the time. The P-61Bs were painted deep, dark black, making them almost invisible in the night skies before radar had become an arsenal in the defensive abilities of most countries. Even spotlights had trouble finding them. The most famous crew and plane flew their affectionately titled Times-A-Wastin' P-61B to an incredible achievement on December 29th, 1944, when they intercepted and destroyed three Japanese aircraft in a single night--no easy feat in daylit skies, let alone at night.
