The sealing itself is done with a reliable, temperature-resistant composition. Some gaskets have a tough steel core that gives extra rigidity to resist pressure and vacuum. On top of that, these gaskets are extra-thick to resist crushing. That also gives you a little extra clearance between the valvetrain and the valve cover.
