Casual observers might use the terms “wing” and “spoiler” interchangeably to refer to any aero element on the rear of the vehicle, but serious enthusiasts know the difference:

• A spoiler or ducktail is an air barrier, with no space under it. Air moving rapidly over your vehicle creates low pressure, or lift, and that reduces traction. A spoiler interrupts that airflow, negating lift and smoothing out airflow around the vehicle.

• A wing sits above the vehicle with space underneath for air to pass through. Compared to an airplane’s wing, the shape is inverted so that air pressure increases on the top. This “downforce” pushes the vehicle against the ground to increase traction at high speeds.

Both wings and spoilers can also generate drag, slowing the vehicle down. Balancing the forces of lift and drag results in optimal performance.

Of course, spoilers and wings also serve a purpose on non-racing vehicles…they look really cool!
