FAQ Section:

Q. What exhaust system adds the most horsepower?

A. Technically, an aftermarket exhaust system doesn’t add power. Instead, they’re designed to be less restrictive, so your engine uses less energy pushing out exhaust gases. Reducing or eliminating exhaust restrictions allows your engine to operate more efficiently, resulting in more power being sent to the wheels. That being said, a vehicle with a properly-tuned aftermarket exhaust may gain up to 5% more horsepower. Most builders include an aftermarket exhaust as just one part of a comprehensive package of upgrades (including air, fuel, weight reduction, and so on).

Q. How do I get a deeper sounding exhaust?

A. While specifics vary by vehicle, the process typically begins with an aftermarket exhaust system featuring larger-diameter piping and less restrictive mufflers than the factory setup. Performance mufflers and resonators are designed to absorb the higher frequencies in your exhaust note and bring the lower tones into harmony. Other modifications, like cold air intake kits, can also affect the sound of your vehicle. The best way to get the sound you want? Find fellow enthusiasts with vehicles similar to yours and ask them how they did it!

Q. What are the differences among aftermarket cat-back, turbo-back, and axle-back exhaust systems?

A. When an exhaust system says it’s “something”-back, it means that it replaces every exhaust component after that “something” to the rear of the vehicle.

  • “Axle-back” means everything after the rear axle—the muffler, tailpipe, and exhaust tip. These are generally just to change the sound of the exhaust

  • “Cat-back” includes everything from an axle-back system, plus the intermediate pipe that connects from the catalytic converter to the muffler. That intermediate pipe is usually a larger diameter than stock, with mandrel bends for smoother flow, so they result in some performance gains.

  • “Turbo-back” systems include everything after the turbochargers, including catalytic converters.

  • “Header-back” systems are for racing vehicles with exhaust headers. Catalytic converters and mufflers are usually not included, since these vehicles can’t operate on the street.
