Building a new engine (or restoring an older one) takes time, tools, and lots of tuning, so buying a crate engine can be a wise investment. You can also decide how much finishing and customizing you want to do:

• A short block includes a balanced rotating assembly and little else.

• A long block usually comes with cylinder heads, oil pan, camshaft, and valve covers, along with horsepower and torque ratings

• A fully dressed engine includes everything except front drive accessories (like alternators and power steering pumps), and even a warranty!

These terms aren’t that precise, and can mean different things to different manufacturers, so make sure the crate engine you buy comes with everything you need and nothing you don’t.
