Many of the late model blocks have taller lifter bores, which means standard seat height lifters with an offset require manual notching of the lifter bore for pushrod clearance. They center the roller tip over the valve tip at the correct time so that the roller tip is never more than 0.020 in. off-center of the valve tip. At the greatest load point, the roller tip contact is on the center of the valve. At valve closing, the roller tip contact is slightly behind the valve centerline. When the valve is at full open, the tip contact is slightly behind the centerline of the valve. The results are more horsepower and better performance.
