Each rod is multi-stage heat-treated, X-rayed, sonic-tested, magnafluxed, 100 percent machined, and then shot-peened to stress-relieve the metal. The rods have precision cap alignment sleeves to positively locate each rod cap, silicon bronze bushings for floating pin models—and are available in stroker models that allow additional cam-to-rod clearance for large stroke combinations. They come standard with 190,000 psi rated ARP 8740 and 230,000 psi rated ARP 2000 rod bolts, or 265,000 psi rated ARP L-19 bolts as upgrades. Instructions and rod bolt lubrication are included. Higher rpm, increased boost/drive pressures, and aggressive camshaft profiles can result in valve float and cause serious damage to diesel valvetrains. Valves can also be blown open by higher boost and exhaust drive pressures creating reversion that allows exhaust gas to enter the cylinders on the intake stroke. This re-introduced exhaust gas shields fuel particles from oxygen, delays the start of combustion, decreases cylinder pressure and temperature, and lengthens the time needed to completely burn the fuel … all reducing power. Hamilton Cams valve springs can improve power by allowing higher boost pressures and rpm without valve float or excess reversion. Their single valve springs work well up to 4,500 rpm with moderate-lift camshafts and OEM-size valves. However, as rpm, valve lift, spring pressures, and valve sizes increase, dual Hamilton Cams valve springs are necessary to properly control the valves. For the highest camshaft lifts, they should be used with Hamilton Cams titanium retainers. Note: As a precautionary measure, titanium retainers should be inspected after every season for excessive wear.

The pistons are hand-deburred and then coated with dry phosphate to protect against ring micro-welding and pin galling during initial startup. For additional performance, Mahle added its proprietary Grafal anti-friction coating to the piston skirts. Part numbers with T on the end have a cutting edge ceramic-based thermic barrier. The barrier is resistant to thermal shock, insulates the piston crown, and reduces heat transfer to increase performance.
