A pair of valve locks (also called valve keepers) fits around the top of each valve stem, securing the spring retainer on top of the valve spring. More power means stronger springs, and that means the retainers and locks have to get stronger to keep up.

Stock replacement valve locks are usually made of steel and have a narrow taper. In a performance engine, they’re made from harder materials, and the taper widens (up to 10 degrees, or more!) to spread the load out.
