Building a new engine (or restoring an older one) takes time, tools, and lots of tuning, so buying a crate engine can be a wise investment. You can also decide how much finishing and customizing you want to do:

A short block includes a balanced rotating assembly and little else.
A long block usually comes with cylinder heads, oil pan, camshaft, and valve covers, along with horsepower and torque ratings
A fully dressed engine includes everything except front...

These terms aren’t that precise, and can mean different things to different manufacturers, so make sure the crate engine you buy comes with everything you need and nothing you don’t.
