Q. Is my oil pan steel or aluminum?

A. The easiest way to tell is by material appearance and weight. Steel oil pans typically have a painted or powdercoated black finish and are magnetic. Aluminum oil pans, on the other hand, are usually silver or raw cast and will not attract a magnet. They also tend to have thicker walls and visible casting lines. If the pan is still installed, you can try using a magnet on the bottom of the pan—if it sticks, it's steel. Aluminum pans are lighter and more corrosion-resistant, often used in performance applications where heat dissipation and weight savings are priorities.

Q. How do I know if an oil pan will fit my engine and chassis?

A. Fitment depends on both the engine platform and the vehicle’s chassis layout. Start by identifying your engine (e.g., GM LS, Ford Windsor) and sump location—front, center, or rear—based on your chassis crossmember and steering setup.
