If you’re restoring a classic muscle car, building a high-performance street machine, or creating a modern custom ride, Summit Racing offers a wide selection of dyno-proven crate engines to match your unique style and performance goals.
In addition to their impressive horsepower and torque, Summit Racing crate engines stand out for their convenience and reliability. They arrive pre-assembled and ready for installation straight out of the box. Skip the wait at the machine shop and get on the road faster!
Every Summit Racing crate engine is carefully constructed using high-quality components and undergoes rigorous testing. Our commitment to quality ensures that you receive a reliable engine that consistently performs well, minimizing the risk of issues down the road.
Choosing a crate engine can also be more cost-effective than building one from scratch. You can save time and money while still achieving outstanding performance, making it a wise investment for any automotive enthusiast. If you’re looking for an upgrade or planning a new build, consider the options available from Summit Racing. Our crate engines could be the perfect solution to enhance your driving experience!
A. Buying a crate engine is often more cost-effective than building one yourself. Building involves expenses for parts, labor, and possible troubleshooting. Crate engines come with a warranty and are ready to use, saving you time and money.
A. To determine the best crate engine for your build, you should first define your project goals: what type of vehicle do you have and what performance level do you want? Do you need high horsepower for racing, or reliability for daily driving? Check compatibility with your existing drivetrain and chassis, and seek advice from our Summit professionals or online resources for tailored recommendations.
A. Summit Racing crate engines typically run on pump gas for convenience and cost-effectiveness. However, some high-performance engines may need race gas due to higher compression or specialized tuning. Always check the engine specifications before purchasing.
A. When selecting a transmission for big block crate engines, it's vital to consider the power output, intended use (such as street driving, drag racing, or off-roading), and personal preferences. The TH-400 and 4L80E are both robust automatic options that perform well in high-torque applications. Keep in mind that the 4L80E features an overdrive and requires a controller. For those who prefer manual transmission, options like the TREMEC TKO-600, TKX, and T-56 6-speed manual can handle higher horsepower while also providing overdrive for comfortable highway cruising.
A. To determine if your fuel system can support a crate engine, assess the following:
Fuel Pump Capacity: Ensure your fuel pump can deliver the required volume and pressure for the new engine.
Fuel Lines: Ensure your fuel lines are the correct size to meet your engine's increased flow demands. The size of the fuel line is critical for delivering the necessary fuel flow to support your engine's horsepower output. Generally, larger engines and those equipped with forced induction systems (such as turbos or superchargers) require larger fuel lines. For instance, a 350 to 450 horsepower engine typically uses a 3/8 inch (or -6 AN) fuel line, whereas a 450 to 650 horsepower engine may need a 1/2 inch (or -8 AN) line.
Fuel Injectors: If you're upgrading an existing application with EFI, you may need larger injectors. Some crate engines include fuel injection or carburetors that match the engine's power rating.
Fuel Filter: Ensure your fuel filter can handle the flow requirements.
Fuel Pressure Regulator: EFI engines typically operate with an electric fuel pump that provides around 43.5 psi and use a bypass or return-style regulator to send unused fuel back to the tank. Boosted EFI engines require a regulator that increases pressure in proportion to the boost, usually at a 1:1 ratio. Some carbureted engines may also use external regulators to reduce fuel pressure from higher-pressure pumps.
