The steel spools are heat-treated and precision-machined; while lighter aluminum spools are available for Ford 9 in. and GM 12-bolt units. The aluminum models feature a thicker ring-gear flange and a large-diameter midsection for increased strength; they weigh approximately 4 lbs. less than steel spools.
