All 'standard finish' ring gears are black phosphate coated for wear resistance and corrosion protection. The black phosphate coating provides a microporous layer on the surface to hold lubricants to minimize friction between gear teeth, resulting in less wear during the initial break-in period and increases the overall life expectancy of the gears.
