Hamilton Cams camshafts are available in a wide variety of profiles to improve airflow whether you're towing 30,000 lbs. in the mountains, drag racing, or sled pulling. They have the widest selection of cams to meet your specific turbo size, application, and rpm range needs from 1,500 to 6,500 rpm. OEM cast iron camshafts typically have a very hard exterior for long life with softer cores that can handle torsional forces without fracturing. However, when a camshaft that was designed for 2,800 rpm starts getting pushed beyond 5,000 rpm, you are a good candidate for a Hamilton Cams steel camshaft. Even more so when large injection pumps, heavy springs, and high-lift profiles are used. Because they are ground on precision CNC grinders, in most instances Hamilton Cams camshafts do not need to have the centerlines moved. However, because of OEM production tolerances, issues can arise when switching crankshafts and cam gears from different engines and year models. Incorrect camshaft centerlines can be remedied with an offset key. Hamilton Cams has keys that offset the installed centerline from 1.5 to 5 degrees. All Hamilton Cams camshafts are for off-road use only.

Hamilton Cams Cummins Tappets are solid valve lifters and are available for Cummins 24-valve and 12-valve 6-cylinder engines. They are also offered for Cummins 4BT 4-cylinder (8-valve) engines. Cast tappets for 6-cylinder engines feature a 1.450 in. diameter and do not interfere with the fuel pump eccentric on 12-valve engines. Much wider than the 1.100 in. tappets used in early 12-valve engines, their greater surface area makes them perfect replacements. These 24-valve and 12-valve tappets work well with the wider lobes of Hamilton Cams camshafts and promote much better lobe life with today's low zinc oils. For use over 5,000 rpm, with heavy valve springs, or a billet steel cam, Hamilton Cams offers 1.450 in. steel tappets. They are specially designed and manufactured to handle the higher pressures, rpm, and loads of competition use. Hamilton Cams Cummins 4BT tappets have a 1.300 in. diameter; much wider than many 4BT tappets that are only 1.10 in. These cast 1.300 in. tappets allow the pressures between the camshaft and the tappet to be spread over a significantly larger surface area to reduce lobe and lifter wear.

Higher rpm, increased boost/drive pressures, and aggressive camshaft profiles can result in valve float and cause serious damage to diesel valvetrains. Valves can also be blown open by higher boost and exhaust drive pressures creating reversion that allows exhaust gas to enter the cylinders on the intake stroke. This re-introduced exhaust gas shields fuel particles from oxygen, delays the start of combustion, decreases cylinder pressure and temperature, and lengthens the time needed to completely burn the fuel … all reducing power. Hamilton Cams valve springs can improve power by allowing higher boost pressures and rpm without valve float or excess reversion. Their single valve springs work well up to 4,500 rpm with moderate-lift camshafts and OEM-size valves. However, as rpm, valve lift, spring pressures, and valve sizes increase, dual Hamilton Cams valve springs are necessary to properly control the valves. For the highest camshaft lifts, they should be used with Hamilton Cams titanium retainers. Note: As a precautionary measure, titanium retainers should be inspected after every season for excessive wear.

Hamilton Cams extreme-duty pushrods are the result of intensive research to produce designs that create the perfect balance between weight and rigidity to maximize rpm. They provide extended longevity and superior operation under extreme conditions, without adding excessive weight to the valve train. Hamilton Cams extreme-duty pushrods feature heat-treated, chromoly construction with carefully selected pushrod diameters and wall thicknesses to avoid the excessive costs of exotic materials. They are a step up from Hamilton Cams heavy-duty pushrods.

When added to most current diesel engine oils, Hamilton Cams Cam-Shield zinc additive will raise the zinc and phosphorous levels to approximately 1500-1650 ppm … ideal for flat tappets cams. To protect your investment, use this premium ZDDP additive for break-in and at every oil change for competition and marine diesel engines. For daily drivers, it should be used at least for break-in.

Hamilton Cams street and towing camshaft kits are complete with a matched camshaft, valve springs, pushrods, tappets, retainers, and locks. Kits are offered for improved street performance or with specially designed towing camshafts that are more efficient with a quicker spool-up on factory turbos. Towing cams also offer more torque on the bottom end of the power range. Heavy-duty pushrods handle increased cylinder pressure, spring pressure, and rpm … far beyond the level of stress factory pushrods were designed for. Performance valve springs work well up to 4,500 rpm with OEM size valves. Retainers and locks are made from tool steel; tappets promote better lobe life with today's low zinc oils and are effective up to 5,000 rpm.

Hamilton Cams valve spring retainers are available in lightweight tool steel or titanium. Tool steel retainers are recommended for engines running over 4,500 rpm with a camshaft with over 0.320 in. lobe lift. Titanium valve spring retainers should be used for cams with over 0.370 in. lobe lift. Note: As a precautionary measure, titanium retainers should be inspected after every season for excessive wear.

Diesel engines running higher rpm, increased boost/drive pressures, or a more aggressive cam often experience valve float, which can cause serious damage to the valvetrain. Also, the intake and exhaust valves can be blown open by higher boost and exhaust drive pressures creating reversion, which reduces power by allowing exhaust gas to enter the cylinder on the intake stroke. The re-introduced exhaust gas shields the fuel particles from oxygen, increases the delay from the start of injection to combustion, decreases the maximum pressure and temperature in the cylinder, and lengthens the time needed to completely burn the fuel. Correct valve spring pressure is very important to power production. Upgraded valve springs allow higher boost pressures and rpm without valve float or unacceptable levels of reversion. Hamilton Cams valve spring and retainer kits with SINGLE valve springs and tool steel retainers typically work well up to 4,500 rpm with moderate-lift camshafts and OEM-size valves. However, there comes a point as rpm, valve lift, spring pressures, and valve sizes increase, that a single spring is no longer up to the task of controlling the valves. This is when it is time to use Hamilton Cams kits with DUAL valve springs and, for the highest lobe lifts, titanium retainers. Kits are available in different sizes and other options. Note: As a precautionary measure, titanium retainers should be inspected after every season for excessive wear.

Because performance diesel enthusiasts use their vehicles in a very wide range of applications from 150 to 3,000 hp, it's not possible to engineer, build, and stock camshafts that will work in every application flawlessly. To meet those needs, Hamilton Cams custom grind camshafts are available in almost any profile, including many competition grinds, to meet your specific needs from 1,500 to 6,500 rpm. Call for profile options. Notes: Since it rarely makes sense to spend the money it would take to have custom cast billets made, Hamilton Cams often uses new camshafts and cuts their custom grind onto them. Hamilton Cams custom grind camshafts are for off-road use only.
