Restoring an old engine or building a new one from the ground up can be a daunting task that requires a lot of time and tools, but there are other, faster ways to maximize your ride’s horsepower and torque. Namely, you could scrap that engine build and go with a proven crate engine instead. Ford Performance offers a wide range of crate engines—from the classic Ford 302 crate engine to the modular Ford Coyote—all designed to deliver world-class performance on the street or at the track.

WHAT ARE CRATE ENGINES?

Essentially, a crate engine is just an engine that has been pre-assembled to simplify your life with a complete, drop-in powertrain solution. Why is it called a crate engine? Because, well, we deliver it to you on a crate.

Crate engines vary in terms of their completeness. Some come with just the engine block, crankshaft, and pistons (short block) to give you more room for customization with the final build. Others include these components while also adding a complete valvetrain, camshaft, cylinder heads, intake, and carburetor (long block). These are the fastest to install and utilize components that offer guaranteed compatibility. Regardless of which you choose, crate engines make for an excellent way to increase power and performance without the hassle of ground-up build.

SPOILED FOR CHOICE

The good news is you don’t have to be a professional race car driver to enjoy the same power and performance they do. Ford Performance offers numerous paths to upgrade your ride with fully assembled, dyno-tested small block and big block crate engines that include all the hardware you need for a successful installation.

Ford groups its crate engines into families, which include classic pushrod motors based on the Ford Boss 302, 351, and 460 blocks, along with more modern aluminum engines.

Pushrod Crate Engines

  • Boss 302 – The Boss 302 stroker engine block is at the heart of several of Ford’s most highly regarded crate engines, which include the fully dressed X2347 Street Cruiser series and the popular Z2363 long block. Each model is designed to provide a solid foundation of performance for a variety of builds.

  • Boss 351 – This is the modern interpretation of Ford’s legendary 427 FE motor. Boss 351-based crate engines are available in long block configurations offering 427 C.I.D. and 535 horsepower or 460 C.I.D. and 575 horsepower.

  • 460 Big Block – Utilizing Ford’s iron 460 block, this 572 C.I.D. crate engine combines superior power with excellent drivability.

  • Race Series – Building your ride with competition in mind? Based on the iconic Boss 302 block, Ford’s 347 C.I.D., 415-horsepower sealed long engine is built to succeed in professional asphalt and dirt racing applications.

  • Super Duty – Found in the 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, Ford’s “Godzilla” crate engine is the perfect foundational piece for a high-powered drag racing build. The 7.3L, 430-horsepower engine will fit into a Foxbody Mustang almost as easily as it fits into your truck.

Modular Coyote Crate Engines

  • GEN 3 5.0L Coyote – Ford’s modular high-performance Coyote engine is available in multiple configurations to accommodate applications ranging from street rods, to NMRA drag racing, and everything in between.

  • Aluminator 5.2 XS – A follow-up to the A50XS, the Aluminator 5.2 XS takes technology designed for the Shelby GT350 Mustang and applies it to a 5.2L cross-plane crankshaft crate engine. Rated to 580-horspeower at 7,800 rpm, this is Ford Performance’s most powerful naturally aspirated modular crate engine.

Turbocharged Crate Engines

  • EcoBoost – With an all-aluminum powerplant, dual overhead camshafts with twin independent variable timing, and dual water-cooled turbochargers, Ford’s 2.3L 310-horsepower EcoBoost crate engine offers endless swap potential in a contemporary, high-powered package.
