Clevite H-Series rod bearings were developed primarily for use in NASCAR type racing but are suitable for all types of competition engines. These H-Series bearings have a medium level of eccentricity, high crush factor, and have hardened steel backs and thin overlays. They also have enlarged chamfers for greater crankshaft fillet clearance and are made without flash plating for better seating. Bearings with .001 in. extra clearance are available for standard size shafts and with or without dowel holes. H-Series bearings are recommended for use with crankshafts that have oversize fillets and where engines run in the medium to high rpm range. They should also be used if contact patterns obtained with Clevite P-Series bearings are too narrow. Contact patterns should ideally cover 2/3 to 3/4 of the bearing surface.

Clevite H-Series main bearings were developed primarily for NASCAR racing, but are well suited to other types of competition engines as well. They're especially good for engines that run at medium-to-high revs. They have steel backings with carefully selected overlays and a high crush factor, plus a medium level of eccentricity. H-Series bearings have enlarged chamfers at the sides for greater crank-fillet clearance and are made without flash plating for better seating. They are also available with either 180 degree or 360 degree oil grooves, as well as an extra 0.001 in. of clearance.

P-Series rod bearings are the oldest members of the Clevite 77 performance bearing family. They're intended for high-revving engines, especially those where the high rpm cause the rod bores to narrow. To compensate for this distortion, these direct replacements have higher eccentricity and a high crush factor. Clevite P-Series rod bearings are built on hardened-steel backings with extra-thin overlays, and their lower sections have dowel holes for use with aluminum rods, and there are extra-clearance variations available with an additional 0.001 in. of clearance. Order the model designed for your vehicle and engine application.

Clevite P-Series main bearings are the oldest members of the Clevite 77 bearing family and are intended for high-revving engines. To compensate for the high-load factors and distortion in these engines, these bearings have higher eccentricity and a high crush factor. P-Series bearings are constructed of tri-metal cast copper lead. They have a steel back for support, a cast copper lead lining to withstand the loads of engine operation, and an electroplated babbit overlay on the running surface to provide searing surface qualities. In addition, the oil grooves on most applications extend all the way around both halves for better oiling. Clevite P-Series main bearings are an ideal design, producing a degree of conformability, embedability, slipperiness, and fatigue resistance, not found in original equipment and competitive bimetal bearings.

Clevite coated H-Series rod bearings were developed primarily for NASCAR racing, but are also well suited to other types of competition engines. They're especially good for engines that run at medium-to-high revs. They have hardened-steel backings with thin overlays and a high crush factor, plus a medium level of eccentricity. H-Series bearings feature Clevite's exclusive TriArmor coating, the industry's only moly/graphite treatment. The sophisticated blend, in a low-friction PTFE polymer base, offers extraordinary protection and lubricity. They also have enlarged chamfers at the sides for greater crank-fillet clearance and are made without flash plating for better seating. The Clevite coated H-Series rod bearings are available with various under-sizes, including 0.001 in. of clearance for polished journals.

If you liked the results that you used to get with Vandervell bearings--especially their higher conformability--then you should love Clevite V-Series rod bearings, which basically duplicate the Vandervell items. Built on un-plated, hardened-steel backings for better dimensional accuracy and bore contact, they have low-to-medium eccentricity. The biggest difference between V-Series and other Clevite 77 bearings is their lead-indium surface alloy, which gives them that extra conformability. V-Series bearings are available in narrower versions to provide greater crank-fillet clearance, as well as in extra-clearance variations that provide an additional 0.001 or 0.002 in. of clearance.

For some engines, the softer and more conformable nature of aluminum is preferable to the stiffer characteristics of the steel backings used for many bearings. Clevite AL-Series main bearings offer the features found in OE-type aluminum bearings, combined with the distinct advantages of proven Clevite know-how. That includes things such as carefully chosen eccentricities tailored to the application, and that means solid, reliable performance. Clevite AL-Series main bearings are a great choice for anything from OEM-style rebuilds to mild performance applications. Clevite recommends these main bearings for most engines using a cast crankshaft.

The biggest difference between V-Series and other Clevite 77 bearings is their lead-indium surface alloy, which gives them that extra conformability. Unlike Vandervell main bearings, Clevite V-Series main-bearing sets use a single-piece thrust bearing, so you don't need separate, assembled thrust bearings. Extra-clearance variations are available to provide an additional 0.001 or 0.002 in. of clearance.

Clevite 77 Plastigage was designed to be a final check of total vertical oil clearance during reassembly. It is not meant to be a replacement for properly measuring crankshaft journals, housing bores, or bearing dimensions before engine reassembly with accurate micrometers and gauges. Plastigage is available in four different sizes to check total vertical oil clearance on connecting rods and main bearings. Each package has a measuring scale printed in inches and millimeters. The strips are color-coded for easy size identification and are soluble in oil.

More and more manufacturers have shifted to aluminum bearings in their OE engines and Clevite AL-Series rod bearings are designed to be the highest-quality replacement bearings in the industry. They carry on the tradition and reputation that Clevite has built throughout the course of time. AL Series engine bearings feature a 100 percent lead-free aluminum silicon bi-metal material, which includes 60 percent more silicon than the leading competitor's bi-metal material for better conditioning of journal surfaces. These bi-metal bearings also offer greater wear resistance than the leading competitor's bi-metal material, as well as greater seizure resistance. Clevite AL-Series bearings feature 100 percent bored inside diameters for precision and surface characteristics and, where appropriate, straight-shell main bearings utilizing an "umbrella" groove that allows for superior oil control and improved pressure.

Clevite engine bearings have helped power every single NASCAR champion since 1948 to Victory Lane, setting the pace for quality and reliability in the most demanding of settings. Their V-Series main bearings typically have low to medium eccentricity and a hardened steel back with a high crush for better seating and retention. They also do not have flash plating on the steel back to provide better dimensional accuracy and bore contact, using a lead-indium overlay which offers better conformability than lead-tin copper overlay with slightly reduced wear resistance. For daily drivers, and racers on tracks around the country, Clevite continues to be the brand of choice for engine builders with the coated V-Series main bearings best suited to match their application.
