Our Summit Performance® headers are manufactured from mandrel-bent tubing for superior flow and greater horsepower. The headers feature a pressure-formed collector for a better flow rate and a jig-welded tube-to-flange plate for a perfect fit. They're made for off-road and racing use only. Unless otherwise noted, these headers are designed to fit the vehicle as it came from the manufacturer. This includes components like cylinder heads, chassis, steering, motor mounts, body mounts and bushings, etc. If your vehicle is using aftermarket components, parts from other applications, or custom-altered parts, then it is the installer's responsibility to verify fitment.

Special warning regarding Summit Racing® painted headers only. The paint on these headers is not designed as a final finish; it is designed to protect the headers after the manufacturing process and during shipping. This paint will not withstand the high heat associated with engine break-in, nor will it withstand the heat cycles associated with any type of driving. It is recommended that this protective coating be stripped, and a high heat paint or coating designed for use on headers be applied.

Questions & Answers Ask a Product Question
Q:

I received the headers promptly. The note in the package says the coating on the headers is for rust only and will burn off at engine operating temperatures. Sanding will be laborious and may not allow a complete removal where access is difficult; blasting will have extra time and cost but may be result in more thorough removal. Does anyone have experience with applying high temp paint over the supplied coating? Any experience without doing anything to the factory coating? Curious about any options. Thanks in advance.

Asked by KERWIN on October 27, 2017

A:

Thank you for your question. As you mentioned, the paint on the headers is for protection during storage and shipping and will burn off. Even if you paint over it with a quality hi-temp paint, you'll still end up with the hi-temp paint coming off when the shipping paint underneath burns off. Blasting it off will be the most thorough way to do it but will add cost. You might do a Google search on the topic and find other methods that have worked for your fellow enthusiasts.

Perfect Fit

Application '78 Nova Fit perfectly. Plus they arrived in 2 days. Saw a review a guy needed to remove his oil filter. Don't know his application but mine I thought was in the way too until I lifted the car a coupe more inches. Another guy said he had to drill a hole bigger. I thought so too until I loosened the other bolts and then they all went in perfect tightening a little on each at a time. Starter has to come out to install but put back in and tightened down before the header is tight. Otherwise it blocks 1 starter bolt. ...read more

69 Nova w/ power steering, 400 sb. They fit great, went on easy, with no problems. Came with all the hardware and thick gaskets. The only reason they got a 4 star is there were a few paint drips and excess paint or glue material I had to scrape off the bracket surface. No big deal at all. Thanks again Summit.

I installed them on my 1972 camaro and the one on the passenger side hit the floor board . So i called summit and there customer service was GREAT!! They sent me another set but they hit the floor board on the passenger side worse than the first set .So i had to take the first set to a machine shop and get it customized to fit. I sent the second set back to summit that they sent me . I think who ever makes summit headers need to check there specks . I just dont like to have to pay for something then have to pay to get it fixed so it will work as it should have in the first place. ...read more

second time i've installed a set of these exact headers. i bought them for my 68 camaro with manual steering. fit without any trouble. passenger side installed from the top, driver side installed from the bottom. hard to fit bolts due to clearance but all headers are like this. would recomend to friend on a tight budget.

These headers fit right into my '81 Z28 (305) without issue. Both went in from the top (though the left side certainly took some serious convincing to get them into their final position). The right side collector is very close to the floor, but by rotating the flange, it gave me a few mm of clearance, so I'm not too worried (for all I know, the stock 35-year-old motor mounts are a tad worn). I had mine ceramic coated (after having O2 bungs welded in), so they look great - other than the drivers' side tube dent, which looks like it was done with a sledgehammer. But it's not that visible, so it's not really a huge issue. Some of my plugs/wires are close to the primaries, but that was an easy solution of using plug boot sleeves. I may use shorter plugs later on if it becomes an actual issue. I'm sure there are headers that fit slightly better - but none for the price of these. Very happy. ...read more
