For builders looking to inject reliable horsepower into their project, look no further than Chevrolet Performance’s SP350/357 Deluxe Crate Engine. This small block mill puts down 357 horsepower at 5,500 RPM and 407 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,000 RPM with a powerband that’s a country mile wide, making it perfect for muscle cars, street machines, restomods, and even trucks.
Block and Rotating Assembly
At the core of the SP350/357 is a new four-bolt main cast iron block paired with a one-piece rear main seal for improved durability and sealing. A forged steel crankshaft and forged powdered metal and shot peened connecting rods provide a solid rotating assembly capable of handling all the full throttle blasts you care to give. Cast aluminum pistons with 9.0:1 compression have low thermal expansion to reduce engine noise while providing increased ring sealing for consistent performance without sacrificing reliability.
Camshaft and Cylinder Heads
Cast iron Vortec cylinder heads complement the engine’s street-oriented nature. They feature extremely efficient, 62cc combustion chambers that promote strong low- and mid-range torque. A set of 1.940/1.500-inch intake and exhaust valves keep the air and fuel entering and the spent gases exiting the cylinders.
A friction-reducing hydraulic roller camshaft makes the engine easier to live with on the street while still providing a hard punch that will push you back in your seat. It features a .473-inch intake/.473-inch exhaust lift and 215° intake/223° exhaust duration at .050-inch of valve lift to deliver smooth idle characteristics, improved throttle response, and reduced maintenance compared to older flat-tappet designs.
Intake Manifold, Carburetor, and Ignition System
A high-rise cast aluminum, dual-plane intake manifold was chosen because it keeps the air/fuel mixture velocity high at lower engine speeds to maximize torque output for improved performance. It is paired with a 4150-style Holley 4-barrel carburetor with electric choke and vacuum secondaries for easy starting and excellent throttle response. Firing the air/fuel mixture is handled by an HEI distributor fitted with 8mm silicone jacket, suppression-style spark plug wires with Chevrolet script and Bowtie logos, and a set of ACDelco spark plugs.
Other Components and Warranty
The Chevrolet Performance SP350/357 Crate Engine comes assembled with a four-quart, rear sump oil pan with a passenger-side dipstick, black steel valve covers, chrome air cleaner, and starter. The engine is backed by a 24-month or 50,000-mile/80,000-kilometer limited warranty, whichever comes first.
Other Models Available
In addition to the SP350/357 deluxe engine, Chevrolet Performance offers the SP350/357 engine in two other levels of completeness. The SP350/357 Base Long Block Crate Engine is assembled with the rotating assembly, camshaft, cylinder heads, front cover, and oil pan installed. It’s meant for car crafters who already have the other components required to complete the build.
The SP350/357 Turn-Key Long Block Crate Engine ups the ante of the Deluxe engine by adding a water pump, harmonic balancer, alternator, air conditioning compressor, front-end accessory drive kit, dipstick, and externally balanced 153-tooth automatic transmission flexplate to the mix. It’s best for builders wanting the fastest, most straightforward installation available with only basic hookups needed.
