Drop a COMP Cams Thumpr or Mutha’ Thumpr Series hydraulic roller camshaft in your pre-1985 221-302 small block Ford and enjoy the extra power and rorty idle that all of us gearheads love. The cams have a lobe profile that uses an early exhaust valve opening, longer exhaust duration, and more intake/exhaust overlap to improve midrange torque and horsepower while delivering that sound of power at idle.
Swapping your flat tappet cam for a Thumpr or Mutha’ Thumpr roller cam is easy. COMP Cams designed them for use with their Evolution Series hydraulic roller lifters, eliminating the need for the dog bones and lifter retainers Ford used in roller cam small blocks.
The COMP Cams Thumpr and Mutha’ Thumpr camshafts require upgraded valve springs. Decent compression (9:1 and up), good cylinder heads and induction system, and a free-flowing exhaust system are highly recommended for optimal performance. A higher-stall torque converter and lower gears (3.55 and up) are good upgrades as well.
