Remember the old racing adage “There is no substitute for cubic inches”? Even in a world of twin turbos and big shots of nitrous, that still holds true. The bigger the motor, the more air you can pump through it. And that means more power whether naturally aspirated or with a power adder.
That’s what Edelbrock was thinking when it designed the Edelbrock RHS LS Bare Race Block. Available in standard (9.240-inch) and tall (9.750-inch) deck heights, both blocks can be overbored to 4.165 inches. The standard deck block can accommodate crankshafts up to 4.250 inches of stroke. The tall deck block can handle crankshafts up to 4.600 inches of stroke; that’s 501 cubic inches of LS motor at maximum stroke and bore!
Edelbrock made sure the RHS blocks are plenty durable, too. The heavy-duty A357 T-6 aluminum blocks are CT scanned to ensure casting precision and consistency. The camshaft centerline is raised .388-inch and the side oil galley is moved outboard to provide rod clearance for a 4.600-inch stroke crank and minimize windage in the crankcase. A beefy .500-inch (standard) or .750-inch (tall) deck surface provides plenty of material for maximum cylinder head gasket sealing, and chilled main bearing bulkheads add extra stiffness to the casting. Edelbrock even includes a main stud kit with 7/16-20 studs rated at 220,000 PSI tensile strength.
Other features of the Edelbrock RHS LS Bare Race Block include:
• Siamesed 4.125-inch cylinder bores with press-in, spun cast iron sleeves, fully water-jacketed
• Billet 8620 steel main caps with maximized mating surface area and large cap-to-cross bolt fillets for added strength
• Large windage passage area under bores and around main caps
• LS7 style 6-bolt cylinder head pattern—large windows in lifter valley to access the inboard #6 head bolt
• Cam journals machined for 55mm or 60mm roller bearings
• Lifter bosses sized for .904-inch tie bar-style solid roller lifters—can be bored to accept 1.060-inch bushing for keyed lifters
• Priority main oiling system with stepped 1/2- to 3/8-inch NPT plug eliminates restriction created by factory barbell plug
• OEM oil feed with provisions for -12 AN external feed lines for dry sump oiling system
• Provisions for Gen III and Gen IV cam sensors, knock sensors, and valley covers
• Provisions for factory and motor plate mounts for Gen 1 through Gen IV engines
Edelbrock RHS LS Bare Race Blocks come with a bronze cam thrust plate, aluminum rear cover, and -12 AN threaded block freeze plugs. Due to the raised camshaft tunnel, you must use a COMP Cams Hi-Tech Roller Race double roller or adjustable double roller timing set that has two extra chain links.
You will also need one of these COMP Cams timing covers:
• CCA-5496 for LS1, LS2, LS3, and LS6 oil pumps
• CCA-5497 for LS7 oil pump
