Over its 11-year run, the second generation (1970-81) Pontiac Firebird cemented the F-body’s place in muscle car history. Second-gen Firebirds and Trans Ams gave us trims like Esprit, Formula 400, Ram, and SE. (An SE version would be immortalized in the film “Smokey and the Bandit.”) Decal packages got bolder too, with the famous “Screaming Chicken” eventually stretching across the entire hood. Though the convertible disappeared, Hurst-designed T-tops arrived in 1976, in conjunction with Pontiac’s 50th anniversary. Engine options fluctuated throughout the 1970s, but included motors sourced from Pontiac, Chevy, and Oldsmobile. These choices included the all-important Pontiac Ram Air IV 400 and 455 Super Duty; in 1980, buyers could even opt for a turbocharged 4.9L V8 with the Turbo Trans Am (TTA).
