1:18 scale 1965 Shelby GT350 Snake On A Plane diecast model honors Dave Steine's '65 Shelby GT350 that was scheduled for delivery via air freight to Romy Hammes Ford in South Bend, Indiana by Trans World Airlines. It was loaded onto a Boeing 707-331F freighter at the Los Angeles International Airport and jetted across the continent. However, after delivery to the dealership, the buyer backed out of the deal, so the TWA pilot who flew the car from Los Angeles to Indiana got word of this turn of events and decided to buy the car from Hi-Performance Motors, Shelby's own dealership in Southern California. The 1968 1/2 Ram Air II is a late production high performance option that was offered by Pontiac in mid-year of 1968 replacing the original L67 Ram Air option. By any calculation, 1966 was a momentous year for the GTO. The original muscle car had come into its own in persona and popularity. It even became a separate series featuring the hardtop, pillared sports coupe, and convertible. The GTO's all-new body incorporated Coke-bottle side styling and a recessed backlight, with sail panels that provided a semi-fastback appearance. Graduating from the tough, boxy street brawler look of 1965, the '66 was refined with integrated shapes. Its front bumper became an integral part of the nose, closely following the curves of the newly sculpted split grilles and headlamp bezels. Parking lamps were set into the grilles à la the 1963 and 1964 Grand Prixes, and the grilles were blacked out--a muscle car styling cue that Pontiac initiated on the GTO in 1964 and would be used by much of its competition going forward. The Edelbrock '32 roadster is one of the most recognized cars in all of hot rodding! Vic Edelbrock, Jr. was an American automotive aftermarket performance parts engineer, racer and is considered one of the founders of the American hot rod movement. He had an impact on hot rodding unlike anyone else. His inventiveness, ability to create extraordinary performance from ordinary engines and ingenuity and dedication to engine building earned him a legacy that will last forever. In 1938, Vic Sr. bought a '32 Ford and used it to test new speed parts, more or less inventing "the project car." The first big seller from an Edelbrock project car was the Slingshot manifold. Vic became a consistent winner with his modified roadster at racing speeds of 112 mph. He would drive the Ford to the dry lakes, remove the fenders and the windshield, and then race the car. "Akron" Arlen Vanke was a working man's drag racer. Competing--and winning--in the Stock, Super Stock and Pro Stock classes, he set records with Pontiacs and, later, Plymouths, earning multiple Stock Eliminator titles with both marques. Through it all, he built the cars in a backyard garage and often drove his open ramp truck to the track and back. In fact, Chrysler hired Vanke to test their performance technology. In 1967, Arlen modified the RO23 Hemi intake manifold for racing. "NHRA rules allowed racers to modify the intake manifold, so I made the stock manifold into a plenum chamber manifold, " he said. Vanke's Hemi, along with the Sox and Martin team, gave Mopars so many victories in the late '60s that they dominated the scene in Super Stocks. In 1968, he built this incredible East Town Hemi Cuda, which helped him win the Nationals in August at Indy running SS/B. He then reset the record again with a 10.61 at 140 miles per hour in the Plymouth Cuda in SS/A at the Winter Nationals in Pomona, California. For most of its 40 years, the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 LS6 has been doing exactly what it was built to do: tear up the drag strip. Along the way, it's become arguably the most famous drag racing Chevelle ever, capturing the SS/DA class record in 1972 and setting an elapsed time of 10:75 at 123 mph on the way to winning Top Eliminator 14 of 16 events at Bradenton Dragway in Florida in 1976. Purchased new by A/FX racer Bob Hamilton as a Valentine's Day gift to his wife, the big-block beast was soon spending its Sundays at the local drag strip with Hamilton at the wheel. Sponsored by AMT and dubbed "Red Alert," it began its long and extremely successful career in 1971, setting the SS/DA national record during the 1972 season and owning the track record at New Jersey's Island Dragway for over two years. Hamilton sold "Red Alert" in 1976 to racer Terry Carney who, in 1990, partnered with Bill and Jan Stephenson to reintroduce the car to a new generation of fans and a new career in popular nostalgia drag racing. The car has since run the quarter mile in the low tens at over 130 mph. A true drag racing legend in every sense, the "Red Alert" Chevelle has always been expertly maintained and remains in splendid condition. It is almost entirely as Hamilton raced it, retaining its original sheet metal and interior and most of its original Cranberry Red paint.
