Those first moments that an engine runs prior to building oil pressure are when damage can easily occur. ARP oil pump primer kits let you spin the oil pump with a drill motor and bring up the oil pressure prior to starting the engine. This will prevent unnecessary wear or damage to rotating, reciprocating, and valvetrain components. ARP's rugged primer shafts are rated at 170,000 psi to ensure extended service life. They also feature a special billet aluminum sleeve that accurately positions the shaft and keeps it from wobbling.

Proform Oil Pump Primer Sockets make a time-consuming job quick and easy. Made of hard anodized aluminum, the socket tools slip over the crankshaft and snug into the splines of the oil pump. To use, the oil pump drive gear must be removed from the crankshaft. When assembling an engine, these sockets can be used with the timing cover on or off. Order the model recommended for your vehicle year/make and engine application. (NOTE: This is for aftermarket setups only, because the OEM oil pump drive gear will not come off separately. Use a 3/8 in. adapter and a power drill to prime away happily.)

COMP Cams oil pump primer tools allow the oil pump to be primed and the engine prelubed prior to initial start up. This eliminates the chance of a "dry start" and premature engine damage. COMP Cams primers drop in place of the distributor, and with the use of a drill, spin the oil pump to supply oil to critical engine components. Both models feature a top alignment collar and the Chevrolet model includes a bushing to pressurize the upper valve train too.

The first few seconds of an engine's life are critical. Stef's oil pump primers help start a motor off right by pre-lubing the bearings before firing the engine. The shaft is inserted in place of the distributor; a drill motor chucked on the small end of the primer spins the oil pump, pressurizing the oil galleys and ensuring there's an adequate supply of lubrication throughout the engine. Models are available with a spacer to pressurize the lifter galley—or with a spacer to pressurize both the lifter galley and distributor drive.
