Carbon deposits form on intake valves and other engine components via the oil mist of blow-by gases from the PCV system. On gasoline direct-injection engines this problem is compounded as there is no fuel to wash the oil mist off the back of the valves. The aluminum catch can features an internal baffle and a 50-micron filter that works in sequence separating and capturing oil mist from blow-by gases before the mist enters the intake tract. Oil collected in the catch can is easy to drain through an integrated drain plug or by removing the lower half of the can.
