The main caps secure the bearings that hold your crankshaft in place. Different engine designs (SBF, BBF, SBC, BBC, LS, Coyote, etc.) use different quantities of main caps, and those caps are held down by main bearing cap bolts. In addition, 2-bolt main caps are common, but 4-bolt mains and 6-bolt mains may be used in high-powered engines for extra strength.
