The 383 stroker motor dates back to the 1970s and is based on a Chevy 350 small-block. By lengthening the stroke (piston travel) and boring out the cylinders to reach 3883 cubic inches, it's become one of the most widely used stroker kits and crate engines.

The Chevy 400, featuring a 4.125" bore, was plagued by overheating issues attributed to its thinner cylinder walls.
