For dragsters and race cars running at over 7,000 rpm, a crank trigger system produces rock-solid spark timing.
A traditional distributor is fine for a street vehicle’s ignition, but high compression, forced induction, and big revs can play havoc with your timing. Any slack in the timing chain or lash in any of the gears can cause misfires or false triggers, and that can cost you a race.

A crank trigger features a wheel that attaches directly to the front of the harmonic balancer, and a sensor that reads the position of that wheel as it spins (the type of sensor varies by manufacturer). Since there’s no mechanical lag in transmitting the crankshaft’s rotation, timing remains perfect even at extreme speeds.
Timing adjustment can be made by moving the sensor; any centrifugal advance from the distributor is locked out. You can retain the distributor to drive you oil pump, or convert to a distributorless system.

MSD flying magnet crank triggers use four magnets permanently embedded in an aluminum wheel. As the crank rotates, the magnets pass a non-magnetic pickup, which triggers the ignition. These MSD systems include a trigger wheel, pickup, CNC-machined aluminum mounting bracket, and hardware.

Holley's EFI crank trigger kits provide accurate crank speed and position signals to Holley EFI systems in the most demanding, high-horsepower, racing applications. The crank position is measured every 10 degrees instead of every 45 degrees, like standard 4-magnet crank trigger systems. Holley's EFI crank trigger kits feature 1/4 in. thick, billet steel, 36-1 or 60-2 tooth-crank trigger wheels with black zinc oxide finish for superior corrosion resistance and striking good looks Other notable features include: * Crank wheels center off of balancer hubs, eliminating the need for centering rings * All billet, 6061-T6 aluminum sensor mounting brackets with "bright-dipped" black anodized finish and laser-etched Holley EFI logo * Custom 3-wire, ferrous-target, Hall-effect sensors with M12 x 1.0mm threads for finer gap adjustment * Grade 8 and mil-spec mounting hardware

You can benefit from a stronger and more consistent trigger signal with Moroso crank trigger Ultra Series kits. These kits use a transducer mounting bracket, which allows for a better timing adjustment range over the others. Their damper register locates the crank trigger wheel to help keep it perfectly aligned and concentric as it rotates. Other product features include built-in strain relief, a double-cavity nylon connector, and powerful rare earth cobalt magnets.

Recently, engineers at FAST turned to the OEMs to see what they trust in the way of rpm-measuring crank triggers for their 400 and 500 horsepower daily drivers. Until now, flying magnetic trigger wheels with bulky inductive pickups have been used with the risk of broken magnets or losing magnets at high engine rpm. Now there is a better answer--FAST magnet-free crank trigger kits. A magnet-free device, these kits from FAST include a wheel constructed from ASTM A36 grade steel that is so strong that it only needs to be .125 in. thick and is virtually indestructible. With the wheel being this thin, it not only weighs less but requires less space than competitors' aluminum versions. And the FAST inductive sensor is also much smaller than others on the market and is hermetically sealed with the connector molded into the body. The key to the crank trigger's dependability and accuracy lies in the trigger wheel design. Rather than having added magnets, the wheel has tabs on the outer rim. These tabs are measured by the inductive sensor as the wheel revolves, which then provides data to the fuel injection and ignition systems for accurate rpm measurement. And because the tabs are a part of the single wheel unit, there is no possibility of loss or fragmentation as with the magnetic style trigger wheels. This sensor is used by OEMs both on and inside the engine and provides long-lasting, accurate timing. Installation is straight forward, and everything required is included. For those already using the FAST XFI system, it's a plug and play unit. In addition, it's compatible with many other EFI systems on the market.

FAST magnetic crank trigger kits are setting the new industry standard for timing accuracy while preserving compatibility with other brands' ignition systems. Crank triggers are known to provide the most accurate crankshaft rotation measurement; however, modern fuel injection systems and sophisticated testing equipment have exposed inadequacies in traditional crank trigger designs. To correct for timing fluctuations in high-rpm racing applications, FAST engineers replaced the fluctuation prone 2-wire inductive pick-up with a modern digital hall-effect design. This digital hall-effect pick-up, coupled with samarium cobalt magnets installed in the trigger wheel, result in crank rotation measurements that are accurate to a quarter of a degree from zero to 13,000 engine rpm. These pickups are far less susceptible to electromagnetic noise interference than 2-wire designs. Additionally, the pick-up accuracy is unaffected by electrical system voltage variations—maintaining quarter-degree timing accuracy from 7 V to 30 V DC. Outputting a clean square-wave signal, FAST magnetic crank trigger kits can trigger ignition boxes directly or integrate with EFI systems such as the FAST EZ-EFI 2.0, XFI Sportsman, and XFI 2.0. An integral LED eases timing calibration and diagnostics. These kits don't sacrifice durability for technological innovation. Crafted from billet aluminum then black anodized, the trigger wheels and pick-up brackets will withstand harsh racing environments. OEM-quality braided wire wrap protects the pick-up pigtail, while a weatherproof Deutsch connector terminates the harness. Order the kit recommended for your year, make, and engine application.
