These high-performance automatics step it up with features like high-strength, 300M alloy steel input shafts, high-volume pumps, recalibrated full-manual trans-brake valve bodies, billet aluminum drums, billet steel clutch hubs, 36-element pro-mod sprags, and more.

Q. What transmission works best for my build: street, strip, off-road, or towing?

A. For mild street use and daily driving, any of Summit’s standard-duty automatic transmissions are a great choice and will provide many miles of smooth, reliable service. For street/strip or drag racing applications, step up to a Summit Racing Performance TH-400 or Powerglide transmission. They’re built to take the high power levels and abuse of drag racing, and include features like manual valve bodies and trans-brakes.

If your vehicle is used primarily off-road or for towing, consider a TH-400 or 4L80E. These are beefier transmissions that can handle the strain of off-road use and heavy loads. For occasional off-roading and lighter towing, any of Summit’s automatic transmissions are suitable, though an auxiliary transmission cooler is recommend (a transmission cooler is a great addition that will prolong the life of any automatic transmission).

Q. What are the types of automatic transmissions?

A. The most common type of automatic transmission is the conventional torque converter automatic. This encompasses everything from the classic 2-speed GM Powerglide and 4-speed GM 4L80E, to newer transmissions like the 8-speed TorqueFlite used in Mopar and RAM vehicles, and the 10-speed Ford 10R80 used in the Mustang and F-150.

Additional automatic transmission variants include DCTs (dual-clutch transmissions), which are essentially automated manual transmissions, and CVTs (continuously variable transmissions) which employ a set of variable-diameter pulleys to create a continuous range of ratios without the fixed steps common in other transmissions.

Q. How do I know what transmission I have?

A. Often, transmissions have external markings on the case or pan that will provide identification. Also, searching “transmission dimensions” in the Help Center at SummitRacing.com can help you narrow it down.

Q. Should I get a CVT or automatic transmission?

A. You often don’t have a choice between a CVT or automatic transmission; it’s determined by the vehicle make and model. Also, there are very few situations where you could swap an automatic transmission for a CVT, or vice versa. However, if you’re considering purchasing a vehicle and the transmission type is a determining factor, CVTs are generally favored for fuel efficiency in smaller vehicles. For higher-performance vehicles, larger cars and trucks, and heavier-duty applications, conventional torque converter automatics are still the transmission of choice.
