In an automatic transmission the sprag also called a one-way, or roller clutch is a mechanical clutch designed to lock up or stop a drum from rotating when a clutch is applied during an up shift. The torque load they are required to hold is usually a lot, even with stock engines. As horsepower and torque go up the demand on these sprags does too, which can lead to failures. By adding extra rollers or elements and hardened steel outer races you can increase the torque carrying capacity and durability of your transmission.
