Race failure is a chronic problem with high-torque loads causing race fractures at two stress points: the radial lube holes and the sharp inside corners at the base of the outer splines. Sonnax outer races are engineered with offset lube holes so rollers never travel directly over the holes, and they are spaced so only one roller is ever positioned near a hole, radically reducing the risk of fracture. The OE pressure regulator valve design prevents adequate cooler flow at low rpm and high-pressure conditions, which can create overheating. Additionally, in 1999 and later vehicles, the factory EPC pressure was set high at idle, resulting in engine surge conditions in GM 4L80-E and 4L85-E units. Input housing failure at the shaft and forward piston areas is common in high-torque 4L60, 4L60-E, 4L65-E, and 4L70-E transmissions. Also, the input drum assembly is known to crack and strip out splines where the input shaft is pressed into it (where the overrun piston rides). Sonnax input housing sleeve kits—forward sleeve kits and overrun sleeve kits—when used in combination with each other, greatly increase the maximum strength of the housing for additional torque capacity and can prevent these failures. Some GM transmissions send various trouble codes related to internal fluid pressure failures to your TEHCM. These codes may be accompanied by torque converter clutch (TCC) apply problems or shift irregularities such as slipping, flares, harsh application, and bind-ups. When the Sonnax apply ring is installed, the original equipment waved plate can be eliminated, allowing for one additional friction and steel plate to be installed increasing the 3-5-R clutch capacity by 25 percent. The extra clutch and steel also help to dissipate heat and increases the durability and longevity of the 3-5-R clutch pack in high-performance applications.
