TransGo's new oversized S4 regulator valves GM 8L45 and 8L90 solve significant wear issues at the S4 regulator valve position. When General Motors made a change to the S4 regulator valve in both the 8L45 and 8L90 transmissions, the updated 2-land design and computer command strategy resulted in significant increased wear, even at low mileage. TransGo Performance automatic transmission compensator feed regulator valve kits play a critical role in managing clutch function and shift-feel in the 6L series. They supply regulated pressure to the balance side of the rotating clutch drums. This is done to counteract the unintended apply of clutches due to the centrifugal forces of the residual oil in the apply chamber. Ideally, this pressure and its resulting centrifugal forces cancel out the forces inside of the apply chamber, simplifying clutch apply calculations by the computer. If the pressure is too low or too high, it can dramatically affect shift quality. In cases of very high pressure, it can keep the on-coming clutch from applying resulting in a cut-loose.
