Their built-in, rebuildable thermostat bypasses the oil cooler until the oil has reached its maximum operating temperature, allowing your engine to warm-up quicker and prevent oil from being over-cooled. They also allow a small percentage of fluid to continually circulate through the cooler, eliminating air pockets and preventing cold fluid from being trapped in the cooler and shocking the system.
