Q. What does the AN stand for in AN fitting?
A. "AN" stands for Army-Navy. These fittings were originally designed and built for use in military aircraft during World War II. They were born out of the need for reliable high-pressure fittings that could be quickly assembled and installed.
The sizing system is based on the outer diameter of the tubing or hose in 1/16-inch increments.
Example:
A -6 AN fitting refers to a 6/16" (or 3/8") outside diameter.
A -10 AN fitting is 10/16" (or 5/8").
AN fittings are designed for high-pressure fluid systems, featuring a 37-degree flare sealing surface that ensures a tight, vibration-resistant, and leak-proof connection when installed properly. This makes them ideal for automotive fuel, oil, coolant, and hydraulic lines.
Q. Are AN and NPT the same?
A. No. AN and NPT are not interchangeable and utilize very different sealing principles. Threading an AN fitting into an NPT port—or vice versa—without the correct adapter will result in leaks, damaged threads, or system failure. Fortunately, Summit Racing offers a full selection of AN-to-NPT adapters if your build requires both types.
AN fittings use straight threads and a 37-degree flare to seal at the face of the fitting. They require a matching male and female flare to seal properly. These types of fittings are typically found in performance automotive and aviation systems.
NPT (National Pipe Thread) fittings use tapered threads that seal by thread interference. For proper sealing, this type of fitting typically requires the use of thread sealant or Teflon® tape. They are commonly used in plumbing, industrial, and OEM applications.
Q. Why do some AN fittings have O-rings?
A. O-ring boss fittings (also referred to as ORB or straight-cut AN fittings) include an O-ring that is compressed in a bevel at the top of the port to create a strong, reusable seal that can be easily oriented. O-rings are typically made of rubber or elastomer. It's essential to use an O-ring material that's compatible with the fluid in the system.
For example, O-ring-equipped AN fittings are commonly used in power steering systems, transmission coolers, and aftermarket fuel system components like pumps, filters, and fuel rails. The O-ring provides a cushion and seals at the port face, rather than the threads—this helps reduce the risk of leaks without requiring sealant or Teflon tape.
