FAQ SECTION:

Q. Are all engine stands the same?

A. While they look similar enough, engine stands are not all created equal. Different weight capacities, wheel configurations, and feature sets can make a huge difference in terms of making your engine easier—and safer—to work on. When shopping for yours, some features to consider include:

  • Rotating and Locking Heads – Most modern stands utilize some sort of rotating head, but it’s worth looking for one that allows you to lock the head in place. Being able to turn the engine to different positions makes working on it more comfortable. Some Summit Racing stands even include gear reduction heads with cranks.

  • Folding Stands – Engine stands can take up a good amount of space, so being able to tuck them away when not in use is beneficial in a cramped garage or shop. This feature also makes your stand easier to transport.

  • Caster Size and Type – Larger casters can make repositioning your stand easier in a shop with uneven floors, as can their ability to swivel. Many stands have fixed rear casters paired with front ones that swivel, but others include swivel casters at all wheel positions for increased mobility. Just make sure that at least one caster can be locked to prevent the stand from moving when it shouldn’t.

Q. How many legs should my engine stand have?

A. Some stands are inherently riskier to use than others, and using the wrong one for your project or your workspace could end in disaster. Many builders still rely on T-shaped stands with three legs and three wheels, but this configuration can be much more prone to tipping than modern four- to six-wheel stands that balance engine weight more effectively. If you do choose a stand with three legs, be sure to go for a wide base.

Q. What size engine stand do I need?

A. Engine stands come in a variety of weight capacities. The size you need depends on the size of the engine you’re working on, but broadly speaking the higher the weight rating, the better. Summit Racing engine stands come in a variety of weight ratings from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds.

Q. How do you fix an engine to an engine stand?

A. Attaching your engine to the engine stand is a simple process. Use an engine hoist or cherry picker to lift the engine until it’s aligned with the stand’s mounting plate, then match appropriately sized grade-8 bolts to the engine’s bellhousing or block bolt pattern. Ensure everything is tightened down, and then you’re done!
