Edelbrock Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) Systems

Whether you’re building a modern engine or reviving classic iron, you don’t have to be stuck using a carburetor. Installing an EFI kit will give your engine better throttle response, more power, better fuel economy, and more tunability. With an Edelbrock electronic fuel injection (EFI) system, making the switch to EFI is straightforward. They make pre-built kits with simple wiring and a combination of pre-programmed maps and self learning capabilities, so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to use one.

Edelbrock was first to market with an EFI system in 1979. Since the introduction of the Pro Flo 1 in 1992, these EFI systems have used a multi-port injection system with injectors at the ends of the manifold next to the intake valve. While fuel delivery using throttle body EFI is uneven, port injection delivers fuel directly to each cylinder, maintaining a steady air fuel mixture across your engine. This placement also improves atomization, helping the fuel burn in the combustion chamber. This results in lower fuel consumption and more power than competing systems.

The ECU included in each fuel injection kit can handle several engine control systems. It’s up to you to decide how it is used:

• Control the amount of fuel sprayed by the injectors based on several factors including rpm, air flow, and exhaust oxygen levels.

• Control the ignition curve using an Edelbrock distributor.

• Turn cooling fans on and off based on coolant temperature.

When buying an Edelbrock EFI kit, you have a choice of getting it with or without a distributor. Almost any fan can be wired to the ECU.

Self learning EFI like Edelbrock’s Pro-Flo 4 gathers data from multiple points, including the MAP sensor and wide band oxygen sensor. Using this information, it can adjust fuel and spark to keep a steady air/fuel ratio and prevent knocking. This also lets the system adjust to changes in altitude, so your engine will always run great, even when you’re driving on mountain roads.

You can alter the fuel map and other parameters using Edelbrock’s E-Tuner 4 app for Android. The ECU has Bluetooth, so you don’t need to run a cable between it and your smartphone or tablet. That means you can monitor your engine and make adjustments when you’re driving your vehicle, or you’re standing in front of the engine bay. The built-in wizard lets you set up a base map in minutes. From there, you can fine tune the settings manually, or let the self learning system do most of the work.

When installing an EFI conversion, keep in mind that fuel injectors need higher fuel pressure than carburetors. You will need to upgrade your fuel pump and lines to deliver the fuel the injectors need. Fortunately, Edelbrock offers kits with all the parts you need to upgrade your fuel system for the new EFI system.
