Cars with big cams may run a little short on vacuum for their power brake boosters. For all of the vacuum that you need, just install one of our Summit® electric vacuum pump kits. They include a shiny 12 V pump and all of the vacuum line, fittings, and hardware required for installation. These units are completely self-contained, with no need for the additional wiring of relays or switches—simply supply power to the units and they regulate themselves. When vacuum levels drop below 15 hg, the electric vacuum pumps activate and increase brake vacuum to 20 hg.

Questions & Answers Ask a Product Question
Q:

I have a BBC with a big cam and no vacuum for power brakes. I installed a canister, but did not help. Can/should I use my canister in conjunction with this pump? Or should I eliminated the canister? Pros/cons? Thanks!

Asked by DON on November 30, 2017

A:

Use of the canister is better -- the pump won't run as often

Answer This Question

Q:

Is the pump supposed to constantly cycle on and off? I installed this on a '67 Pontiac 400 with a big cam to run my newly installed power brakes (really should have left them manual, but here we are). I wired it using a relay directly to the battery via the splice bus behind the battery. So the vacuum gets up to about 20" and then shuts off and turns on about every 5 seconds. There aren't any leaks. I actually pulled more vacuum in the system via a hand pump up to about 24" and it still cycles on and off. The pump gets super hot. It also has been causing my interior lights to dim for a second every time the pump cuts on. Is this something with the regulator that can be adjusted or is this just how it normally operates? Seems odd it just keeps switching on and off even though it has plenty of vacuum. I don't want it to burn out prematurely. Also any ideas why the lights dim for a second? I cleaned the contacts and used 10 gauge wire to run the pump. Thanks.

Asked by JASON on October 03, 2017

A:

Where did you mount the unit? And,did you wire the relay control lead to 12v, to a switched circuit? Your pump may be running all the time if wired wrong. You also have an adjustment screw for what reading you want the pump to kick in. That adjustment may be set at the low end. This will cause your pump too be kicking in constantly. Which in turn will draw more amps and cause dimming issues. Hope this is of some help. Steve

Answer This Question

Q:

Will this vacuum pump pull enough vacuum to operate the head lights, power brakes and heater control valve on a 1982 corvette?

Asked by DENNIS on July 27, 2016

A:

I installed this pump on a 1967 Big Block Camaro with a very healthy cam that only manages about 10"hg. I plumbed it to augment, not replace my engine vacuum. I had Nova front/Caddy rear power disc brakes with low vacuum and scary braking for years. In prep for the 2016 Hot Rod Power Tour, I installed Wilwood brakes all around, but kept my Corvette style MC and 8" dual diaphragm booster. Even with the far superior clamping ability afforded by the Wilwood binders, braking was still insufficient. Once I added this vacuum pump, the braking performance is now extremely competent, and this is without a vacuum tank. My HVAC also functions flawlessly. I was skeptical at first that I would see such positive results, but it really serves it's purpose. The pump is loud, so I added a manual cutoff switch for when I have the key on/motor off. I know this doesn't directly answer your question about 1982 Corvette headlights, but if you have low engine vacuum due to a big cam, and all of your vacuum accessories are in proper working order, this pump should bring system vacuum up to necessary operating levels. I intended to add a vac reservoir, but so far I haven't needed it. If your headlights need a constant high vacuum source to stay open, this pump and a res tank should do the trick.

Fitted in the engine bay of my 1970 Challenger. It is noisy on start up but does build vacuum in a few seconds where by it cuts out. Once the motor is running you cant hear it from inside the car though It is also quite big. I managed to fit it on the passenger side inner fender, and it is just behind the alternator. I have a small block stroker. I would think it would need to go in the trunk if you have a Hemi!!! It does however give me some brakes, which after all is more important ...read more

Good Vacuum Pump

Pump works as described. It is a little noisy and bulky, but it does the job well for supplying correct vacuum pressure to the brake booster. Recommend using a mounting bracket and a sturdy surface.

Have a 502 with oversized cam in my '67 Chevelle. Have power brakes but it never felt like it since vacuum was so low. Installed pump and now brakes work like a new car. Mounted in trunk and can only hear it a second or two right before starting. Once engine is running can't even tell it is there.

Very happy with pump. After install brakes worked immediately and effectively. So now I can stop the car instead of just slowing it.
