Beware. I used it on a YC9 5.3L after a cam swap and AFM delete. I now have low oil pressure at idle and will be swapping it out with a Melling M365HV

Would this be good for a bigger cam swap?

A:

I would replace the oil pump when doing the cam swap because you have to remove the oil pump anyway, I noticed my oil preasure being low at about 150,000 and this pump made it come back to above 40 psi at idle again even with 230,000 on it now!

I just want to know if it's a defective pump I installed it on an engine stand upside down when I prime the pump is leaking oil through the front cover of the pump

A:

Thank you for your question. The Summit 121170 oil pump will push oil through the gear housing under normal operation. This is not concerning, just check your oil pressure when the engine is up and running to make sure it isn't using too much of your oil pressure, but this is not a common problem.

Quality USA made. Being a tinkerer, I did pull the pump apart and ported the inlet and outlets. There is a ton of excess material that impedes oil flow.

Melling Pump for a reasonable price

Don't need to shim the spring!! Great pump. It a Melling part numbered pump. ***For anyone wondering, it already has an appropriate bypass spring for improved oil pressure. ~40psi at first start on fresh LS build, using 10w30 conventional. I first started with two .050 shims like everyone does on older gm pumps...got 60psi at startup and nearing 100psi at 3-4k rpm. WAY to much for my NA build. Took um out, cranked it back up, 40psi at cold start, 70psi or so at 4k or so, which oughta translate to around 70-75psi at WOT with warm oil and a broken in engine. ...read more
