Overview
Standard Motor Carburetor Power Valves
Standard Motor carburetor power valves (often referred to as Economizers) are vacuum-operated enrichment valves designed to deliver additional fuel to the engine under heavy load or acceleration. They monitor intake manifold vacuum to keep the air/fuel mixture lean during cruising and richen it only when needed, enhancing performance and drivability.
Key details about these power valves, often associated with Holley or Motorcraft carburetors:
* They remain closed when engine vacuum is high (cruise/idle) and open when vacuum drops (acceleration/load)
* A properly functioning power valve prevents a lean condition when the throttle is opened, reducing hesitation and bogging
* They are rated by vacuum level (i.e., 6.5 in. of Mercury), with the rule of thumb being to pick a valve that opens roughly 1 to 2 in. Hg below your engine's idling vacuum reading
* Failure symptoms: A ruptured diaphragm or incorrect size can lead to an overly rich or lean condition, poor fuel economy, and power loss
* These valves are generally considered direct-fit OE replacements to restore proper carburetor function
