If you experience radio noise after installing your MSD unit, then you may need to install MSD noise filters. With these in place, the unit will draw current through the noise filter instead of from the battery, so the unit will not affect any of your 12 V or 16 V accessories. These filters come complete with a cover and a mounting bracket.

Questions & Answers Ask a Product Question
Q:

Hi! I have radio noise due to an MSD HEI distributor but I don't have an ignition box like the 6AL or anything...can this still work? How would I plug the noise filter? Thanks

Asked by ETIENNE on May 07, 2017

A:

all it does is filter the positive and negative wires from the distributor. I am beginning to use it all all of my restoration and race situations.
You may also try some shielded spark plug wires that help to reduce RF and also see if your radio wires run near the distributor, assuming its a chevy.

Answer This Question

Q:

I have installed a 6A box and Atomic EFI. My little 400 also has dual electric fans. With one fan running I'm seeing 13.8 Volts out of my 100 Amp alternator. But, when the second fan turns on, I see a drop to 12 Volts and it returns to about 13.6 Volts. During that period I sometimes get a stumble out of the motor, Voltage drop/spike. Would the 8830 noise filter/ surge suppressor help out with this issue? I was thinking of install it on the power feed lines to both the ^A box and the Atomic controller.

Asked by DON on August 27, 2018

A:

No, if the problem is only at idle you can try putting a smaller pulley on your alternator or over drive pulley on your crank or a higher amp alternator such as a 140amp. The noise filter is to filter out back round noise for a radio.

Totally Eliminated the Static from Sound System!

My MSD 6A ignition box and blaster coil made a positive difference on my old '94 F250 460, but when I installed a new Alpine radio and amp boy did it make for a lot of interference. (I reverted to the stock ignition to verify the source.) I tried a noise isolator on the stereo/amp power leads but it was only partially effective. I hooked up the MSD noise filter (and removed the other one) and the interference is totally eliminated! Cheap and easy if you have this problem! ...read more

Not much help

MSD-8830
I just recently installed an MSD 6AL box on my 1980 Trans Am. That went ok, but I had noise through the stereo. Researched and found that I needed this noise suppression coil from MSD. Installed and started engine. Still have noise. Going to try additional ground straps and swap spark plug wires to more noise suppression ones. If not, MSD box is coming out. Spent too much to have a nice stereo to not to get to use it!! ...read more

Wasn't having issues before but am trying to avoid them. Car has a digital 6AL and terminator efi and I'm hoping this and the 8.5 super conductor wires will keep things under control.

Worked 100 percent. Had msd 6A noise while running in my car radio and amplifier. I installed the filter on the MSD 6A powercord by the battery. The noise cleaned up 100 percent at all speeds. I recommend it. Rich NYC 71 Chevelle Legendary Muscle Cars Auto Club
