If you run a blower, turbo, or even a naturally aspirated engine, MSD's Boost Timing Masters allow you to run at the edge of detonation for maximum power output. They can prevent detonation by automatically retarding the timing as your manifold pressure increases. The secret lies in a boost pressure sensor that's inside MSD's solid-state control box. The sensor reads boost pressure through a 1/8 in. vacuum hose attached to a boost pressure source. The result gives you peak power without harmful detonation. A dash-mounted control knob allows you to dial in the retard from 1 to 3 degrees per pound of boost pressure, up to a maximum retard of 15 degrees. Vacuum tubing is not included. These units must be used with an MSD 6, 7 or 8 series ignition.

Q:

I'm running a 427ci SBF with a D1 procharger making around 10 pounds of boost. I have installed a BTM and have the knob set at 1 referring to retarding the timing 1 deg per lb of boost. I was needing to know if I lock my MSD distributor out at 32 deg which is my full advance timing will the BTM take out the correct amount of timing even though the distributor is locked out. This car is a daily driver. Thanks

Asked by MARK L on July 08, 2018

A:

I have to start out by saying if I were you I would contact MSD for the best answer on this. Now with my best advice out of the way lets talk. I Don't think the BTM has any idea if the distributor is locked or not I think it just takes the # of degrees away from whatever it would have done by the setting on the BTM. You do have a MSD CDI box right? because the BTM won't work without it. Do you have one of those fancy programmable distributors? Why are you locking out the timing? Street motors run like doodoo without more advance when your not wide open.

Q:

Question about connecting the boost sense line to the MSD. I am building a blow-through turbo setup for a air cooled VW engine. The turbo will blow into a custom manifold running into Hilborn MFI throttle bodies. Should the boost sense hose be connected at the manifold (pre throttle bodies), or does it need to be connected below the throttle body butterflies? Below presents a problem so I'm hoping it is ok to connect to the manifold. Thank you.

Asked by THOMAS on January 25, 2018

A:

Connecting the boost sense hose to the manifold will do the trick.

Q:

I have a Petronix digital CD ignition box....will this work with this ignition?

Asked by FRANK on October 26, 2017

A:

Thank you for your question. The MSD Ignition 8762 ignition box must be used with an MSD ignition control. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the Pertronix CD ignition box.

I installed this on my 1963 Turbo corvair. I had a MSD 5AL on the car and was under the impression that I had to upgrade to a 6AL. This was not the case I wired it up according to the instructions and it runs great. Pulls timing just like it's supposed to.

I have had one of these in my 56 Chevy for 15 years with a blower and there is no better way to control timing with street gas vs race gas. (THEY REALLY WORK)
