Expansion plugs (or freeze plugs) serve two primary purposes: to block coolant leaks from internal passages, and to protect the engine block from cracking if the coolant inside freezes and expands. The plugs are designed to "pop out" under the pressure of expanding ice, preventing more severe damage, like a cracked block.
