Answer This Question

Q:

Does the adjustment just limit the amount of advance or does it adjust the spring tension on the diaphragm?

Asked by GREG on February 26, 2017

A:

First, this kit allows you to optimize the mechanical advance curve. Then you are able to adjust the vacuum advance to minimize spark-knock. Adjusting the vacuum pod does preload the diaghram spring, thus causing the vacuum advance to diminish quicker as you accelerate, which causes vacuum to decrease. The instructions gives a clear description of how to tune the engine with the kit. It is really worth the money if you follow the directions.

This is a great kit. You need all of these parts to narrow down your timing. You need the initial high enough and the max not too high and this kit dose it all. I don't usually take the time to rate things but this kit is well deserved. Don't waste your time with less.

I don't like the way the limiter works

CRN-99600-1
The limiter plate actually pre-loads the canister spring, which I personally think is crude. That also means you now have more initial advance, meaning you have to turn the distributor to get it back where you want it. IMO, it's best to limit travel on the other side of the pin using Crane's limiter plate, or one you make yourself. You will need to drill and tap a small hole in the advance plate to do this, which is what Crane should have done. And if you don't limit vacuum advance at all, the Crane canister will give you a crazy amount -- somewhere around 25-30 degrees at 18-20"hg! Sure, you may be able to limit it to 10-12 degrees by adjusting the "rate" screw, but then you give up control over when advance starts coming in. I ended up using an AR-12 canister which is perfect for a mild performance small block. ...read more

Nothing is perfect, but if you bought a rebuilt/aftermarket distributor, get and install this unit to recurve your distributor and your hot rod will come alive.
