Questions & Answers Ask a Product Question

Will these heads fit on an 85 mustang 302 roller motor?

Asked by DILLON on April 29, 2018

Thank you for your question. Racing Head Service 35016 cylinder heads will fit the 1985 OE roller block. You will need to get valvetrain components (valve springs, valve lock, retainers, rocker arms) built for use with roller camshafts when assembling these cylinder heads.

Great value.

After finally deciding that I didn't want to buy the absolute cheapest head I could find, and instead looking for a good budget minded head, this one from RHS just kept coming up. This is my first set of aluminum heads so I spent lots of time looking around before I bought these. The first thing I noticed is that the heads are much lighter than cast iron heads. Also the machine work is very clean on all the surfaces, and the entire head had been nicely deburred. No sharp edges to get cut on while handling these things. The casting surfaces in the ports themselves was very smooth and I know that there was lots of time put in to designing the runners. They have the vanes leading up to and away from the valve guide, which is something you see in high performance race heads. Also the shape of the runners was cast very nicely. Just running your fingers through them you could tell that they were nice and smooth and that air wouldn't encounter too many sudden contours that would cause turbulence. Also the valve seats were finished nicely with 4 distinct angles. The spec sheet that comes with the heads outlines all that info for you. However, there were some misalignment on the ports to the valve seat, maybe around .060 offset to one side. Both of my heads were this way. RHS did blend the ports to the seats so that would not create a lip on the incoming charge but the other side stepped out to the seat which would cause a slight high pressure area that could lose a little velocity. Now I'm sure that one could bolt these on and make some good power, but I chose to clean that up the other side with a carbide burr and to try to free up a little more flow and make the transition from the bowl to the seat as smooth as possible. I took as little amount of material off as possible and then blended it back to the bowl. This took maybe 5 minutes and could also be done with a cartridge roll. I did go ahead and smooth up the casting of the ports with a cartridge roll as these will be going on a turbocharged engine and I want good flow. The short side radius also needed to be smoothed up as to make the turn smooth and without any hard edges. Also there was a lip in the chamber that would cause a small wall for the charge to overcome as it exited the valve seat. At low lift that would probably hurt flow, so again, I cleaned that area up too and made the transition from the seat to the bowl smooth. I have several hours of work in doing those things and I have enjoyed working on them very much. It's the little things that make you an engine builder and not just an assembler. Knowing that I put the time in to make these heads perform just a tick better is very satisfying to me! All in all, these heads are very nice and the support I got from both Summit and the tech line at RHS gets two thumbs up from me. I also purchased the valve kit from Summit to compliment these heads and they have some very nice components from Comp, including Farrea valves. more
