The throttle position sensor (TPS) is used to monitor how far the throttle valve (or blade) is open, which is determined by how far down the accelerator pedal has been pressed. This information is relayed to the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU) and determines how much air and fuel is entering the engine, which guarantees a smooth-running engine. When a TPS goes bad, the car's throttle body won't function properly.
