Runs very small

I’m an average guy, 5’11” at 180lbs. I purchased this shirt in a large as most of my shorts are a large. I prefer sleeves to reach the top of the elbow and shirt just below the belt line. Unfortunately, I would probably need to have bought this shirt in a 2x in order to get the shirt to fit how I prefer. It runs very small and is 100% cotton so it shrank down to smaller than a medium carhartt shirt.
