Launched in 1964 as an option on Pontiac’s redesigned Tempest, the first-generation (1964-67) Pontiac GTO is one of the few cars with a legitimate claim to the title of “first muscle car.” As the brainchild of Pontiac Chief Engineer John DeLorean, the GTO followed a very simple recipe: stuff a big engine into a mid-sized car. In this case, the engine was Pontiac’s own 389 V8 which grew to a 400 cubic inch V8 in 1967.
Internally, GTO stood for “Grand Tempest Option,” while Pontiac sales literature gave it a more European flair, borrowing “Gran Turismo Omologato” from Ferrari.

By 1966, the ‘Goat’ moved to become its own marque—no longer a trim on the Tempest LeMans. Mild annual refreshes occurred over the GTO’s first generation, including a move from horizontal to vertical headlights, trim updates, and the gradual evolution of a more contoured, Coke-bottle body. Coupe and convertible body styles were available.
It’s easy to see why you want to keep your first-gen Goat healthy. Here are some aftermarket parts to help you do it.
